Charting the Quality Roadmap: A Conversation with Mark McClellan
May 20, 2005
This session offered a senior-level audience a look at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator’s agenda to advance health care quality and his strategies for moving it forward. Dr. McClellan discussed partnering with provider organizations and others to identify and pursue initiatives where opportunities for clinical improvement are clear, such as reducing surgical infections. CMS will expand and refine its performance measurement and reporting projects, some of which he characterized as already making a difference in care delivery. Demonstrations will continue to test patient-focused, as opposed to procedure-focused, payment. CMS will lend its powerful support, in part through contracts with Quality Improvement Organizations, to the campaign for widespread adoption of better health care information technology. All of these efforts will work toward the availability of better treatment based on better evidence.
